In India, basmati rice is usually priced in rupees per quintal at the mill gate. One quintal is 100 kg. The rate changes almost every day, with the variety, the grade and the season.
This guide explains what moves the per-quintal rate and how to compare quotes. For today's indicative rates, see our Today's Price page.
Quintal, Kg and Tonne: Quick Conversion
- 1 quintal = 100 kg
- 1 metric tonne (MT) = 1,000 kg = 10 quintals
- Rate per kg = rate per quintal ÷ 100
- Rate per MT = rate per quintal × 10
Example of the arithmetic only, not a market price: ₹7,000 per quintal = ₹70 per kg = ₹70,000 per MT.
What Moves the Price per Quintal
- Variety: 1121 usually trades above 1509. 1718, 1401 and Pusa sit at their own levels, depending on demand.
- Processing form: raw, steam, white sella and golden sella each carry a different rate, because each needs different processing.
- Grain length and broken percentage: longer average grain and fewer broken grains command a higher rate.
- New crop or old crop: new-crop paddy reaches mandis from about October to December. Aged rice, stored for months, often costs more because it cooks better.
- Paddy prices at the mandi: when paddy costs more at markets such as Taraori and Karnal, milled rice rates follow.
- Export demand: orders from the Gulf, Europe and other markets lift domestic rates too.
- Rupee–dollar rate and export rules: a weaker rupee and any change in government export rules move prices quickly.
- Packing: branded or private-label packing in small bags costs more than bulk 25 kg or 50 kg bags.
How to Compare Two Per-Quintal Quotes
- Check that both quotes are for the same variety and the same form.
- Compare the specs: average grain length, broken percentage, moisture and purity.
- Check whether packing, loading and GST are included.
- Check whether the rate is ex-mill or delivered (FOR). Our guide Ex-Mill Rate Meaning explains the difference.
- Ask for a sample before you place a bulk order.
Choosing Between 1121 and 1509
If the price gap matters, 1509 is often the value choice and 1121 the premium one. See our guide 1121 vs 1509 Basmati Rice for how they compare when cooked.
