Private labelling means the rice is milled, sorted and packed by an Indian mill, but it reaches your customers under your own brand. You decide the variety, the quality grade, the pack sizes and the artwork. The mill handles sourcing, processing, packing and export paperwork. For importers, distributors and supermarket chains it is the fastest way to build a rice brand without owning a mill.
This guide walks through the decisions you will make, in the order you will make them.
Start with what your customers cook and what price point you are aiming for.
• 1121 Basmati: the longest grain, the classic choice for biryani and pulao, and the most traded basmati in the Gulf and Middle East.
• 1509 Basmati: a long grain at a lower price than 1121, popular for everyday family packs.
• 1718 Basmati: close to 1121 in length and cooking result, often chosen where buyers need specific residue standards.
• Sugandha Basmati: a fragrant, budget-friendly basmati for value ranges.
• Non-Basmati (IR 64, PR 26, Sona Masoori): for everyday rice, food service and price-sensitive markets.
Then choose the form. Raw rice is soft and aromatic, Steam rice cooks fluffier and separate, and White Sella or Golden Sella (parboiled) stays firm and non-sticky, which restaurants and caterers prefer. Our guide on Raw, Steam and Sella explains the difference in detail.
A written specification protects both sides. Agree it before the first sample.
• Average grain length, for example 8.30–8.40 mm for 1121.
• Broken grains (%), the biggest single driver of price.
• Moisture (%), purity and admixture of other varieties.
• Damaged, discoloured and chalky grains.
• Colour sorting (Sortex) and ageing, since aged rice cooks longer and more separate.
• Pesticide residue limits if you sell into the EU, UK or USA.
Ask for the specification to be printed on every pre-shipment sample label. Then the sample you approve and the rice that ships can be checked against the same numbers.
Packaging is where your brand lives on the shelf. Common formats for private label rice are:
• Retail: 1 kg, 2 kg and 5 kg stand-up zipper pouches or laminated bags, often with a carry handle and a window to show the grain.
• Family and bulk: 10 kg, 20 kg and 25 kg laminated, non-woven or BOPP bags.
• Food service and wholesale: 25 kg to 50 kg woven PP or jute bags.
• Premium: vacuum-packed bricks and cartons for long shelf life.
Bags are usually packed into master bags or cartons and loaded into containers. As a guide, a 20-foot container carries roughly 24 to 26 metric tons of bagged rice, depending on the packing.
Each market has its own labelling rules, so share your country's requirements early. Most markets ask for:
• Product name and rice variety.
• Net weight, and the country of origin ("Product of India").
• Importer or brand owner name and address.
• Batch or lot number, packing date and best-before date.
• Storage instructions, and a nutrition panel where it is required (for example in the EU, UK and USA).
• The local language: Arabic for the Gulf, for example.
• A barcode (EAN/GS1) if you sell to supermarkets.
You can supply ready artwork, or the mill's packaging partner can adapt a design for you. Printed bags take time to produce, so allow a few weeks for the first print run.
• Send your specification, pack sizes, quantity and destination port.
• Receive and test samples, then confirm the price and the artwork.
• Production: milling, sorting, packing and labelling.
• Pre-shipment sample and optional third-party inspection (for example SGS).
• Loading, export documents and dispatch.
